レクチャーコンサート
Abstract
In my art and my research I concerntrate on two things - to understand the mechanisms of artistic creative process, and to develope more intuitive performance instruments for improvisation of electronic music. The purpose of understanding artistic creativity is to be able to evoke creative behavior in computers, and allow computers to actively participate in the making of art and music. In my lecture I will tell a little about my work in this field.

My work on performance instruments is motivated by the need for extreme freedom and agility while improvising together with other musicians. To solve this I have developed a new kind of mapping from control interfaces to synthesis, allowing fingertip control over a large number of continuous parameters, while being very easy to implement. Specifically made for improvisation, they allow a kind of control over sound that was previously only possible in acoustic instruments, and a we have developed a whole family of instruments around these mappings. In the lecture/concert, I will demonstrate a few different versions of these instruments, including one using pencil markings on paper as a gestural interface for analogue synthesis.

Biography
Palle Dahlstedt is a composer, pianist, improviser and researcher from Sweden. Musically he spans from free improvisation and noise electronics to interactive computer music and orchestral music, always driven by curiosity and high energy. As associate professor in computer-aided creativity and main lecturer in electronic music at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, he specializes in developing new ways of improvising on analog and digital electronics, and making computers become creative on their own. His music has been awarded several international prizes (e.g., Gaudeamus Prize 2001), and has been performed all over the world.
